HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Street closure for Welcome to Ames event RESOLUTION NO. 09-379 RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF STREET FOR"WELCOME TO AMES" EVENT FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, in discussing the City Council's priority of"connecting our community with each other and with City government," members of the staff have, once again, been exploring ways to improve upon our last year's"Welcome to Ames"event for incoming and returning ISU students; and, WHEREAS, a committee consisting of representatives from the City's departments has been finalizing plans for the"Welcome to Ames"event,and based on feedback from our student interns and a review of last year's event,the group is proposing an evening of activities on August 28 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.; and, WHEREAS,the proposed location will remain near Fire Station No.2 in Campustown,and City representatives would provide information regarding the Ames community and services the City offers, as well as information on job opportunities for students within City government; and, WHEREAS, the following activities are planned to help attract passers by into this event: free pizza and Ames water;sound system with a DJ playing music;fun activities being planned by Parks and Recreation Department staff;promotional items from City departments will be given away;the electric Zenn car will be on display, along with the new Segways and Street'N'Greet trailer; and,drawings and prizes; and, WHEREAS, in order to facilitate this event, approval is needed from the City Council for the closing of Chamberlain Street from Noon until 9 p.m. on the 28th of August; and, WHEREAS, City staff will be contacting all affected businesses along Chamberlain Street notifying them of the temporary street closing. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the closing of Chamberlain Street between Welch Avenue and Stanton Avenue from Noon to 9 p.m. August 28, 2009, for the "Welcome To Ames" event is hereby approved.
