RESOLUTION APPROVING BOW HUNTING WITHIN THE
PARK SYSTEM AS DETAILED IN THE URBAN DEER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, like many other urban areas, Ames has experienced damage due to high
concentrations of whitetail deer within the City, and in an attempt to reduce the deer population, a
Special Urban Deer Task Force (SUDTF) was convened in 2006; and,
WHEREAS,SUDTF recommendations have included an annual survey of deer populations,
a ban on deer feeding, seasonal traffic warnings, and limited urban bow hunting of deer; and,
WHEREAS, this urban deer hunting has been conducted in a limited number of locations
under special rules administered by the Police Department; and,
WHEREAS, subject to Council action and taking the Department of Natural Resources
(DNR)established hours and dates into consideration,staff is recommending the following locations,
dates, and times for deer hunting: 1) wooded City property south of the Hunziker Youth Sports
Complex (DNR legal hunting hours beginning on November 10); 2) City property north of the
landfill in east Ames off Edison Street(DNR legal hunting hours beginning September 15);3)South
River Valley Park (weekdays one-half hour before sunrise ending by 4 p.m., September 15 to
October 31;weekends one-half hour before sunrise ending by 8 a.m., September 15 to October 31;
daily beginning November 3 during DNR legal hunting hours); 4) Gateway Park, restricted to the
west timber (daily beginning September 15 during DNR legal hunting hours; and, 5) Homewood
Golf Course (daily beginning November 3 during DNR legal hunting hours).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that bow hunting of deer within the City of Ames and Park System as detailed above is hereby
approved.
