RESOLUTION APPROVING TEMPORARY AUTHORITY
TO CITY OF AMES STAFF TO CLOSE ARTERIAL STREETS FOR
RAILROAD CROSSING SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, since the beginning of summer 2008, staff in the Public Works Department have
been working with members of the Union Pacific Railroad(UPRR)to coordinate maintenance work
planned along the north-south rail line through Ames; and,
WHEREAS,the UPRR plans to resurface each of the at-grade crossings for both vehicular and
pedestrian traffic; and,
WHEREAS, the crossings slated for improvements are 9t' Street, 13th Street, 16' Street,
20th Street, 24th Street, and Bloomington Road; and,
WHEREAS,due to recent flooding throughout Iowa,the UPRR had to divert its maintenance
crews to conduct emergency repairs as needed,and,in turn,this has caused the planned improvements
in Ames to be scheduled as crews become available; and,
WHEREAS, the UPRR has indicated that it will be ready to conduct its work at Ames'
crossings beginning the week of August 4 and possibly continuing into the month of September; and,
WHEREAS,UPRR crews stated that in order to place the pre-cast panels used in the surface
repairs,the street must be fully closed to traffic until the repairs are finalized, and each crossing to be
improved will need to be closed for one day to facilitate timely completion of the work; and,
WHEREAS, staff is requesting that the City Council temporarily delegate to Public Works
personnel the authority to close arterial streets for the purpose of the aforementioned railroad crossing
surface improvements.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that
the temporary delegation of Public Works staff to close arterial streets to conduct surface repairs on at-
grade railroad crossings at the aforementioned streets along the north-south rail line is hereby approved.
