RESOLUTION APPROVING CHANGE ORDER FOR
WATER TREATMENT PLANT WELL REHABILITATION PROJECT
WITH NORTHWAY WELL AND PUMP COMPANY
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,has heretofore approved plans,specifications,and
form of contract for the Water Treatment Plant Five-Year Well Rehabilitation Project on March 6,2007;and,
WHEREAS,the project plans and specifications detail the rehabilitation process and time line to be used
for the five-year rehabilitation cycle,and they call for a one-year contract with a possibility of four,one-year renewal
options; and,
WHEREAS,Northway Well and Pump Company of Marion, Iowa, was the low bidder for the one-year
contract period,and its previous performance was deemed satisfactory by City staff;and,
WHEREAS,the second year of the contract,which includes five wells to be completed by June 30,2009,
totals$66,130; and,
WHEREAS, it is anticipated that well repairs will be required in conjunction with the rehabilitation
work, and the extent of the work will not be known until the wells are taken out of service for rehabilitation;
and,
WHEREAS,the bidder has included unit prices for common repair components with the bid,and the
original contract stated that the CPI should be used for steel replacement parts; and,
WHEREAS, staff has determined that the Consumer Price Index does not accurately account for the
rapidly increasing cost of steel,therefore,staff has further determined that the most appropriate and fair solution
is to execute a change order that states the City will pay for steel replacement costs based on actual quotes from
vendors; and,
WHEREAS,well repair costs will be addressed through change orders at the completion of work on
each well.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
execution of a Change Order to reimburse Northway Well and Pump Company of Marion,Iowa,for the actual
cost of steel replacement materials in connection with the rehabilitation of five wells in FY 2008/09 is hereby
approved.
