RESOLUTION APPROVING REQUEST FOR
CITY TO CONDUCT PUBLIC FORUM ON
GLOBAL WARMING AND POLLUTION REDUCTION
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on May 13, 2008, the City Council referred to staff a letter from the AMOS
Environmental Research Team,requesting that$5,000 be spent on a forum to educate the public on
the issue of global warming and the importance of pollution reduction; and,
WHEREAS, during budget deliberations, the Council earmarked up to $20,000 from the
2007/08 Contingency Fund toward this type of educational endeavor; and,
WHEREAS, AMOS (A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy) is a non-partisan, citizen-action
organization, and the Ames branch consists of members from seven churches and fellowship
congregations; and,
WHEREAS,AMOS rules will not allow them to accept government funding,therefore,what
is being requested is that the City would be responsible for directly paying all costs associated with
this forum; and,
WHEREAS, realizing that this type of venture is very labor intensive, AMOS members
would assume responsibility for handling all of the logistics (food, meeting space, speakers,
advertising, etc.)related to conducting the forum.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that authorization of up to$5,000 to fund a public forum regarding the reduction of global warming
and pollution is hereby approved, and the City accepts the offer from the AMOS Environmental
Research Team to handle all logistics associated with this event.
