RESOLUTION APPROVING REVISIONS AND ADDITIONS
TO PERSONNEL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the Human Resources Department has identified two areas of the Personnel
Policies and Procedures Manual that need to be revised or added to; and,
WHEREAS, new language is being added regarding the Healthy Employee 2010 program
financial award, and it is an individualized health incentive program designed to motivate actionable
healthy lifestyle behavior change that results in improved health risk status of the participants in this
program; and,
WHEREAS,individual success is measured by either maintaining or adopting healthier lifestyle
behaviors in order to meet the criteria for acceptable(healthy)levels or a successful standard of change;
and,
WHEREAS, the premium cost for the FY 2007/08 incentive is $9,538, which is covered
through the existing Health Promotion budget; and,
WHEREAS, this policy change will allow these incentives to be paid in accordance with
Internal Revenue Service regulations; and,
WHEREAS, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 included an amendment to the
Family and Medical Leave Act(FMLA) to give the "spouse, son, daughter,parent or next of kin" of
a member of the Armed Forces up to 26 weeks of leave to care for a service member; and,
WHEREAS,the Act also allows an employee to take FMLA leave for"any qualifying exigency
arising out of the fact that a spouse, son, daughter, or parent of the employee is on active duty in the
Armed Forces in support of a contingency operation."
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that
the proposed changes to the Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual regarding Health Promotions
and FMLA Military Leave are hereby approved.
