RESOLUTION APPROVING AGREEMENT
FOR ARTWORK AT ADA HAYDEN HERITAGE PARK
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the Public Art Commission(PAC)has been pursuing a project to incorporate
sculptural artwork into Ada Hayden Heritage Park(AHHP) over the last three years; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council has approved a total of$18,000 in local option funding over
a three-year period for this purpose; and,
WHEREAS, the PAC believes that the organic nature of artwork created by Patrick
Dougherty, an artist internationally recognized for weaving together sticks and saplings to create
outdoor sculptures,will be well-suited to AHHP; and,
WHEREAS, the artist has confirmed that there are several viable locations in the Park for
placement of one of his structures,has accepted a deposit of$1,000,and has set aside September 30
through October 20, 2008, to do the work; and,
WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved the proposal to
locate a biodegradable sculpture at AHHP for approximately three to five years; and,
WHEREAS,this project will be heavily dependent upon volunteer labor and will provide an
opportunity for many Ames residents and students,with assistance from members of the Public Art
Commission and City Staff, to collaborate in its creation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the agreement with Patrick Dougherty of Chapel Hill,North Carolina, for creation of artwork
at Ada Hayden Heritage Park at a cost of$14,000 and for transportation and living expenses while
engaged in the project in an amount not to exceed$4,000, is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 22nd day of January, 2008.
