RESOLUTION APPROVING DOWNTOWN FACADE GRANT
FOR 230-232 MAIN STREET
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, in January 2007, the City Council approved a$8,520 Downtown Facade Improvements
Grant for the replacement of all of the upper story windows at 230-232 Main Street and the glass storefront at
the Chocolaterie Stam (230 Main), subject to City staff approval of the materials as consistent with the
Downtown Design Guidelines; and,
WHEREAS, after providing information on approved window materials,the building owner chose to
replace only the glass storefront,and he completed that work and received a grant payment of$2,228.50; and,
WHEREAS, at this time, the owner is ready to proceed with replacement of all of the upper story
windows at 230-232 Main and the front door at the Chocolaterie Stam; and,
WHEREAS,although this is the second grant for this building,the grant program specifies no limit on
the number of times the grant can be applied to a building,but only the total amount that can be granted over
the life of the project—which is $15,000; and,
WHEREAS,this grant request and the previously approved grant total no more than$12,228.50; and,
WHEREAS, the applicant has provided specific materials information and pricing verifying that the
work will meet the Downtown Design Guidelines; and,
WHEREAS, a new grant is requested for up to a maximum amount of$10,000 for work currently
estimated to cost$18,490.39; and,
WHEREAS, staff has requested an additional amount to cover unexpected actual costs that may be
encountered after demolition work is completed; and,
WHEREAS,the grant payment will be for 50%of the actual cost of completed work,but no more than
$10,000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the
request for Downtown Grant Fund assistance in an amount not to exceed$10,000 for facade improvements at
230-232 Main Street(second floor) is hereby approved.
