HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Expansion of Food Inspection Program RESOLUTION NO. 07-349 RESOLUTION APPROVING EXPANSION OF FOOD INSPECTION PROGRAM TO INCLUDE ADDED FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, the City has conducted its own food safety inspections program for over 35 years, and the City Sanitarian conducts inspections of all food service establishments within the City under contract with the State of Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA); and, WHEREAS,the current contract was established in 1998,and covers all restaurants, bars, school kitchens, motels/hotels, and vending machines; and, WHEREAS,the current agreement does not include inspections for food establishments such as grocery stores and convenience stores, home food producers, and food processing (warehouse) operations, which are performed by the DIA; and, WHEREAS,staff approached the DIA in 2004 to expand out local work program to include these additional categories, but the proposal was declined by the DIA, which countered with a proposal that the City assume food safety inspections for all of Story County; and, WHEREAS,after careful consideration, this proposal was declined, because the state fee structure would not have covered the costs of our assuming responsibility for a county-wide program; and, WHEREAS,the DIA recently approached staff regarding the City's assuming responsibility for all food safety inspections within the City limits, and this matches the proposal made by City staff in 2004; and, WHEREAS,the new contract would increase the City Sanitarian's workload by an estimated 200 inspections annually, which should be manageable, and in assuming this responsibility, the City will generate additional revenue estimated at $12,156 annually. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the revised contract with the Department of Inspections and Appeals to include additional food establishments, home food, and food processing inspections is hereby approved.
