RESOLUTION APPROVING PURCHASE OF FUEL-EFFICIENT VEHICLES
FOR"COOL CITIES" INITIATIVE
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on May 5, 2007, the Council adopted a new goal to make Ames a more
environmentally sustainable community, and it further approved the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection
Agreement to support the "Cool Cities" initiative; and,
WHEREAS,the City's fleet burns 200,000 of fuel each year, and in response to increases in the
cost of fuel,an initiative was started in 2005 to study different ways to reduce fuel consumption without
reducing services to the community; and,
WHEREAS, from that study, changes in operating processes have been implemented, smaller
vehicles have been purchased,flex-fueled vehicles have been purchased, and more fuel-efficient vehicles
are being purchased to reduce the City's demand for fuel; and,
WHEREAS,in June 2007,bids were solicited for a new compact car for the new Neighborhood
Inspector who will begin his/her duties around July 1,and a 2007 Ford Focus with city fuel mileage rated
at 27 m.p.g. was purchased for this function; and,
WHEREAS, from the bids received, it was determined that four additional cars with high-fuel
efficiency ratings should also be purchased to replace four existing fleet cars; and,
WHEREAS, the four new cars average 30 m.p.g., which would result in an average total fuel
usage of 920 gallons per year, therefore, replacing these four vehicles would reduce the City's fuel usage
by an estimated 605 gallons per year, saving an estimated $1,512 in fuel costs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
the purchase of four fuel-efficient vehicles for the Fleet Replacement Program"Cool Cities"Initiative
