HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Purchase of fuel-efficient vehicles RESOLUTION NO. 07-342 RESOLUTION APPROVING PURCHASE OF FUEL-EFFICIENT VEHICLES FOR"COOL CITIES" INITIATIVE FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, on May 5, 2007, the Council adopted a new goal to make Ames a more environmentally sustainable community, and it further approved the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement to support the "Cool Cities" initiative; and, WHEREAS,the City's fleet burns 200,000 of fuel each year,and in response to increases in the cost of fuel,an initiative was started in 2005 to study different ways to reduce fuel consumption without reducing services to the community; and, WHEREAS, from that study, changes in operating processes have been implemented, smaller vehicles have been purchased,flex-fueled vehicles have been purchased,and more fuel-efficient vehicles are being purchased to reduce the City's demand for fuel; and, WHEREAS,in June 2007,bids were solicited for a new compact car for the new Neighborhood Inspector who will begin his/her duties around July 1,and a 2007 Ford Focus with city fuel mileage rated at 27 m.p.g. was purchased for this function; and, WHEREAS, from the bids received, it was determined that four additional cars with high-fuel efficiency ratings should also be purchased to replace four existing fleet cars; and, WHEREAS, the four new cars average 30 m.p.g., which would result in an average total fuel usage of 920 gallons per year,therefore,replacing these four vehicles would reduce the City's fuel usage by an estimated 605 gallons per year, saving an estimated $1,512 in fuel costs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the purchase of four fuel-efficient vehicles for the Fleet Replacement Program"Cool Cities"Initiative is hereby approved.
