RESOLUTION APPROVING STREET CLOSURE FOR
POWER TO THE PEOPLE RALLY
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, TeamTommy is planning a rally to support Tommy Thompson, one of the
presidential candidates who will be present for the straw poll vote in Ames on August 11, 2007; and,
WHEREAS,over 300 motorcycle riders are expected to ride from Madison,Wisconsin,to Ames
for this event; and,
WHEREAS, event organizers have requested the following street closures on August 10 from
2:00 p.m.until Midnight:Main Street from Clark Avenue to Duff Avenue for the parking of motorcycles,
and Burnett Avenue from Main Street to Fifth Street for a street dance planned to begin at 5:00 p.m.;and,
WHEREAS, each closure of a street in the Central Business District (CBD) does affect the
financial condition of the Parking Fund, and for this event, it is estimated that approximately$400 in
parking meter revenue will be lost; and,
WHEREAS,the organizers are also requesting that electricity fees for the event be waived as well
as the cost for a blanket Vending License; and,
WHEREAS, staff cannot remember a time when City streets were blocked off, permit fees
waived, or a loss in parking meter revenue was absorbed to accommodate an event designed to support
a presidential candidate; and,
WHEREAS, staff believes that no fees should be waived, and the event organizers should pay
$400 to reimburse the City for lost parking revenue.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,that
the street closures on August 10,2007,from 2:00 p.m.until Midnight for the Power to the People Rally
are hereby approved,and the event organizers are required to pay the costs of police security, if needed,
parking, electricity and the Blanket Vending License fee.
