HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Change order for water supply aquifer capacity study RESOLUTION NO.07-330 RESOLUTION APPROVING CHANGE ORDER FOR WATER SUPPLY AQUIFER CAPACITY STUDY FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,since the first water restrictions were imposed in the City of Ames during the drought of 1977, the City has spent several million dollars expanding its water resource capacity to meet future needs; and, WHEREAS, over the past 40 years, the City has funded numerous ISU research projects aimed at determining the most effective use of the limited groundwater resources; and, WHEREAS,current and projected water supply capacity estimates ofthe Ames aquifer are based on studies and data that are now more than 15 years old,and drought conditions during 1999-2006 raised concerns about the City's water supply capacity; and, WHEREAS,in addition, changes in local gravel operations, installation of irrigation wells, and potential demands from industry and ethanol production could impact the existing and future capacity of the City of Ames groundwater sources; and, WHEREAS,a water resources evaluation research proposal from Dr.Bill Simpkins,Iowa State University, was accepted by the City Council in July 2005,and the total study cost is estimated at more than$215,500 through September 2008; and, WHEREAS,it was originally estimated that the City's share would be$125,000 with the remaining$90,000 coming from outside research grants; and, WHEREAS, applications for funding assistance to complete the study have been made to numerous organizations,and while favorable comments have been received about the study,only one additional grant has been received in the amount of$29,932; and, WHEREAS,because the results of this study are exceedingly important for the long-range planning for the water utility,the FY 2007/08 CIP budget included the final $90,000; and, WHEREAS,with the receipt of the grant funding from the Iowa Water Center,a change order is requested in the amount of$61,000 to complete the study. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the change order authorizing an additional $61,000 for the Water Supply Aquifer Capacity Study is hereby approved.
