RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AN AGREEMENT TO
ESTABLISH STREAMING VIDEO SERVICE FOR CITY CHANNEL 12
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,as part of the efforts to meet the Council goal to"Facilitate One Community,"staff
has been evaluating alternative methods of making City information, including council and boards and
commissions meetings, available for public viewing; and,
WHEREAS,currently, viewing of these meetings is only possible by attendance at the meetings
or through City Channel 12, available only on our local cable tv system; and,
WHEREAS, preliminary results from our most recent citizen satisfaction survey indicate that
64%of our residents are cable tv subscribers, and providing live streaming video of the City Channel 12
broadcast would make viewing of City meetings and other Channel 12 information available to anyone
with a broadband Internet connection, providing access to a larger percentage of Ames residents; and,
WHEREAS,our citizen satisfaction survey indicated that 75%of residents surveyed had access
to high-speed/broadband Internet; and,
WHEREAS, to initiate streaming video service at a level that will allow for growth in use and
does not degrade our current service level for City Internet services will require an initial investment in
set-up and equipment and an ongoing cost for hosting service and Internet bandwidth; and,
WHEREAS, our initial cost is estimated at $5,000, and the ongoing cost to operate streaming
video is estimated at $560/month (with funding requiring an amendment to next year's budget); and,
WHEREAS, staff is currently proposing that live streaming video be provided for the broadcast
of City Channel 12, however, if demand for this service grows, we could consider archiving video of
meetings and providing video on demand(though this service would come at a much higher cost).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
the authorization of City staff to enter into an agreement to establish streaming video service for City
Channel 12 is hereby approved.
