HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Grants for Foundation Drain Program RESOLUTION NO.07-307 RESOLUTION APPROVING INCREASE IN GRANT AMOUNTS FOR FOUNDATION DRAIN PROGRAM FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, as part of the effort to minimize the amount of clean water that enters the sanitary sewer system and,thus,processed through the Wastewater Treatment Plant when it is not required to be treated,the City has operated a grant program for residents who convert the discharge point of their foundation drains from the sanitary sewer to the storm sewer; and, WHEREAS, this grant program has been ongoing since 1987, and the program is voluntary and only residential properties are eligible; and, WHEREAS,the grant program calls for the plumbing inspector and the municipal engineer to determine eligibility and confirm the type of work that will be involved, and grant amounts are then determined; and, WHEREAS,when the grant program was initiated in 1987,the base grant amount was$625 and the grant for the more extensive work was $800; and, WHEREAS, in 1990, grant amounts were increased to $900 and $1,100, respectively, and they were increased again in 1999 to their current levels of$1,100 and$1,000; and, WHEREAS,staff feels that an increase in the grant allocation is justified because construction costs have continued to rise over the period since the grant was last increased; and, WHEREAS,utilizing estimates from several local contractors currently completing the conversions and estimates from the municipal engineer and plumbing inspector,an increase to$1,800 is recommended for the base grant amount and$2,200 for grants that require more extensive work; and, WHEREAS,allowing the increase in grant amounts will continue the interest in the program and continue to reduce the"clean"water that enters the sanitary sewer system; and, WHEREAS,it is also recommended that the public works director and the building official be authorized to approve future grant adjustments. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the increase in amounts for the Foundation Drain Program grants to$1,800 for the base grant and$2,200 for the grant involving adding a pit,pump, and discharge pipe is hereby approved.
