RESOLUTION APPROVING THE
NAMING OF THE AQUATIC CENTER AND PARK
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on May 30, 2007, a press conference was held announcing that Don and Ruth
Furman will donate $2 million to the City of Ames if residents pass a bond issue on July 24, 2007, for
the development of an outdoor aquatic center; and,
WHEREAS, the Furman's gift will allow: 1) for the proposed 25-yard lap pool area to be
expanded to 50 meters; 2) for other facility enhancements during the initial construction phase; and, 3)
for the establishment of an endowment to minimize the tax subsidy for operations and to finance future
capital needs for this new facility; and,
WHEREAS, staff applauds this gesture of support demonstrated by the Furmans, and because
of the magnitude of their generosity,the aquatic center can be built in one phase and not incrementally;
and,
WHEREAS, given the significance of this gift, staff recommends that the Council name the
overall site and new aquatic center after Don and Ruth Furman, subject to the successful passage of the
bond issue and the construction of the facility.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,that
the naming of the aquatic center and park after Don and Ruth Furman is hereby approved,subject to the
successful passage of the bond issue and the construction of the facility.
