HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Duff Avenue closure for UPRR surface repairs RESOLUTION NO. 07-165 RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF DUFF AVENUE FOR UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD SURFACE REPAIRS FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, staff was contacted by Union Pacific Railroad(UPRR) regarding repair work that needs to be done to the Duff Avenue railroad crossing; and, WHEREAS, the UPRR identified the week of April 23, 2007, as its scheduled time frame to conduct emergency surface repairs; and, WHEREAS,during the month of March 2007,area UPRR maintenance crews noticed that faults had developed in paneling between the rails that require immediate attention,and staff was informed that the repairs would require approximately six hours to complete,at which point the crossing will need to be closed to vehicular traffic; and, WHEREAS, Duff Avenue is classified as a Minor Arterial roadway, which requires Council approval prior to closure; and, WHEREAS,due to heavy train traffic,the UPRR makes its best effort to coordinate repair work with the normal train deliveries that occur, and recent experience with similar coordination efforts has resulted in the need for flexibility on the part of staff to be able to administratively change the date of the closure as needed; and, WHEREAS,it is recommended that the Council delegate to staff the ability to administratively close the Duff Avenue railroad crossing for the purpose of conducting the required emergency repairs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,that the closure of Duff Avenue is hereby approved, and staff is delegated to administratively approve the street closure to facilitate Union Pacific Railroad emergency surface repairs.
