RESOLUTION WAIVING PURCHASING POLICIES AND APPROVING
CONTINUATION OF PART-TIME MECHANICAL ENGINEERING SERVICES
FOR POWER PLANT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on September 13, 2006, the City issues a purchase order for part-time mechanical
engineering services to Brown Engineering Company of Des Moines, Iowa,
WHEREAS, the purchase order was designed to procure the services of a part-time professional
engineer to develop plans and specifications and evaluate bids on several different projects at the Power
Plant; and,
WHEREAS, to date, the arrangement has been beneficial to the Electric Services Department,
allowing for the development and evaluation of several plant maintenance projects; and,
WHEREAS,the initial purchase order was in the amount of$46,800,and this amount covered the
services from September 2006 to the present time; and,
WHEREAS, the engineering firm is still involved in numerous projects at the Power Plant,
including several upcoming projects, and City staff recommends that this agreement be extended for the
next several months; and,
WHEREAS, the engineering firm helps to fill a critical shortage of engineering work that will be
filled in the future when the new power plant engineer is working full time with the City; and,
WHEREAS, staff recommends authorizing additional payments to Brown Engineering Company
in an amount not to exceed$48,200,and this would pay for ongoing services by the engineering firm until
the new power plant engineer is working full time in June 2007.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the
waiver of purchasing policies and the authorization of the additional expenditure to Brown Engineering
Company of Des Moines,Iowa,for part-time mechanical engineering services in an amount not to exceed
$48,200 are hereby approved.
