RESOLUTION AWARDING CONTRACT FOR
DEVELOPMENT OF OVERALL POWER SUPPLY STRATEGY
FOR ELECTRIC SERVICES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the approved FY 2006/07 CIP includes $200,000 for professional services to
prepare a long-term power supply strategy for the Electric Services Department; and,
WHEREAS, staff informally solicited proposals from four firms to develop this strategy,
which will be a guide for the future of the electric utility; and,
WHEREAS, staff evaluated the proposals and has determined that the proposal submitted
by Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company, Inc., of Kansas City, Missouri, is the best value;
and,
WHEREAS, the company proposes a decision tree process to achieve consensus for a
minimum of three tangible outcomes, and these outcomes will provide the City direction for future
power supply strategy and allow us to move forward with making decisions; and,
WHEREAS, the cost of the proposed services is $99,000; and,
WHEREAS, the final outcome of this work will be a report summarizing the processes and
findings that will be presented to the City Council and to the Electric Utility Operations Review
Advisory Board; and,
WHEREAS, from that point, additional studies and/or research may be needed to develop
specific decisions for the utility.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the contract with Burns and McDonnell Engineering Company, Inc., of Kansas City, Missouri,
in an amount not to exceed $99,000 for development of an overall power supply strategy for the
Electric Services Department is hereby approved.
