HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Downtown Facade Improvement grant for 229 Main Street RESOLUTION NO. 07-013 RESOLUTION APPROVING DOWNTOWN FACADE IMPROVEMENTS GRANT FOR 229 MAIN STREET FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, the owners of 229 Main Street are requesting a $6,893 Downtown Facade Improvement grant for the replacement of the glass storefront and for lights on the facade; and, WHEREAS,the building was built between 1900 and 1911, and the appearance of the entire second floor facade still retains its original appearance; and, WHEREAS, although the lower level facade has been altered several times,the arrangement of storefront elements,such as display windows,kickplate,and recessed entry,are consistent with the period of significance established for the Downtown District; and, WHEREAS,the proposal is to replace the display windows with modern,more energy-efficient material,while maintaining the current arrangement of these elements for an overall appearance very similar to the existing storefront; and, WHEREAS,the City established the Downtown Design Guidelines in 2001, and the purpose of these Guidelines is to ensure that the City assists preserving facades and making facade improvements that are consistent with the historical character of Downtown; and, WHEREAS, the design and proposed improvements meet these Guidelines; and, WHEREAS, the Downtown Facade Program has always been a one-to-one matching funds program that reimburses up to $15,000 for costs after work is completed, and the Council recently changed this program from a no-interest loan to a grant. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council ofthe City of Ames,Iowa, that the request for a grant for$6,893 from the Downtown Grant Fund for property located at 229 Main Street is hereby approved.
