HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Establishment of Railroad Quiet Zone RESOLUTION NO. 06-503 RESOLUTION APPROVING ESTABLISHMENT OF RAILROAD QUIET ZONE FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, the Quiet Zone Final Rule was issued by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)in June 2005, and this offers communities with an opportunity to establish Quiet Zones along the railroad corridor by implementing necessary safety measures; and, WHEREAS,the City of Ames has two separate railroad corridors(east/west and north/south), and therefore, could establish two individual Quiet Zones through the community; and, WHEREAS, on December 12, 2006, the Council was presented with the Quiet Zone Assessment report as completed by SRF Consulting Group,Inc.,and the final report presented safety improvement options that can be implemented at crossings along each of the east/west and north/south railroad corridor to qualify for federally-approved Quiet Zones. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the establishment of a Railroad Quiet Zone along the east/west mainline corridor,including extension of medians at Scholl Road(approximate cost:$15,000),as well as implementation of additional safety features at North Dakota Avenue and North Hazel Avenue (approximate cost: $50,000) is hereby approved; and, staff is directed to develop programs in the Capital Improvement Plan for the Quiet Zone improvements on the east/west mainline corridor and railroad crossing safety improvements on the north/south corridor(five crossings at approximately$250,000/each).
