HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Closure of street for "Welcome to Ames" event RESOLUTION NO. 06-330 RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF CHAMBERLAIN STREET FOR"WELCOME TO AMES" EVENT FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS, in discussing the City Council's priority of"connecting our community with each other and with City government", members of staff began exploring ways to improve upon our initial "Welcome to Ames" event for incoming and returning ISU students; and, WHEREAS,for some students,it will be the first time that they are away from home,and we want to make them feel like Ames is their new home; and, WHEREAS,a committee was formed with representatives from the City's departments to plan a "Welcome to Ames" event; and, WHEREAS,based on feedback from our student interns,the group is proposing one evening of activities on August 25 from 5-9 p.m., and the proposed location is near Fire Station 2 in Campustown; and, WHEREAS,City representatives would provide information regarding the Ames community and services the City offers,as well as information on job opportunities for students within City government; and, WHEREAS, in order to facilitate this event, the closing of the street and metered spaces Chamberlain Street between Welch Avenue and Stanton Avenue from 4-10 p.m. on the 25'of August is needed, as well as the waiver of fees for electricity; and, WHEREAS, staff has contacted all affected businesses along Chamberlain Street to notify them of the temporary street closing, and accommodation will be made for parking for those businesses. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the closure of the street and metered parking spaces on Chamberlain Street between Welch Avenue and Stanton Avenue from 4-10 p.m. and the waiver of fees for electricity usage, all for August 25,2006, for the"Welcome to Ames" event are hereby approved.
