RESOLUTION APPROVING ALLOCATION FROM
COUNCIL CONTINGENCY FOR"WELCOME TO AMES" EVENT
AND PURCHASE OF TRASH RECEPTACLES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS,the"Welcome to Ames"event for incoming and returning Iowa State students will be
held on August 25,2006; and,
WHEREAS,building on last year's success,it is estimated that over 400 people will attend the event;
and,
WHEREAS,after reviewing last year's event,it has been determined that a one-day activity will be
more effective; and,
WHEREAS,the event will be held from 5 to 9 PM near Fire Station#2; and,
WHEREAS,the estimated budget for this event is $4,200; and,
WHEREAS, after convening a small task force of City staff and student representatives, it was
determined that several additional trash receptacles would be helpful in controlling the trash on the streets
and sidewalks of Campustown; and,
WHEREAS, additional trash cans are being proposed for the areas near Kum and Go, the Fire
Station,south of the existing corner park,east of the Fire Station near the Stanton intersection,and south of
People's Bar and Grill near the parking lot entrance; and,
WHEREAS,staff also reviewed the need for additional containers in the Main Street Cultural District
based on the increasing number of events being held there; and,
WHEREAS,six additional containers are proposed to be placed in the high-traffic areas along Fifth
Street and Main Street.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the
financial request for the"Welcome to Ames"event and the purchase of 11 new trash receptacles to be placed
in Campustown and Main Street Cultural District from Council Contingency funds are hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 8t'day of August, 2006.
