RESOLUTION APPROVING TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURE
FOR NATIONAL SPECIAL OLYMPICS EVENTS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, the first National Special Olympics will be held in Ames July 1-8, 2006; and,
WHEREAS,to facilitate the various needs of organizers,athletes,volunteers,and visitors,the
organizers are making several requests for the event; and,
WHEREAS,to ensure the safety of athletes,volunteers,and visitors,the organizers are asking
the City Council to allow the temporary street closure of Lincoln Way between Elwood Drive and
Beach Avenue for short periods of time as needed on July 2 for the Opening Ceremonies, July 4 for
activities at Hilton Coliseum and the Iowa State Center, and July 7 for the Closing Ceremonies; and,
WHEREAS,it should be noted that City staff,particularly Police staff,will be heavily involved
in the National Special Olympics activities,and the overtime cost to the Police Department will total
nearly$8,000 for the week; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council can approve the transfer of Hotel/Motel Tax Fund monies to
recoup the cost to the General Fund for additional Police protection.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that
the temporary closure of Lincoln Way between Elwood Drive and Beach Avenue for short periods of
time as needed by the Police Department on July 2 for the Opening Ceremonies,July 4 for activities
at Hilton Coliseum and the Iowa State Center,and July 7 for the Closing Ceremonies,with the transfer
of Hotel/Motel Tax Fund monies to recoup the cost to the General Fund for additional Police
protection, is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 27`h day of June, 2006.
