HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Free days at yard waste site and RRP RESOLUTION NO. 06-060 RESOLUTION APPROVING ADDITIONAL FREE DAYS FOR YARD WASTE AND RESOURCE RECOVERY PLANT FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA WHEREAS,beginning in the late 1970s,the Resource Recovery Plant(RRP)has sponsored free days at the plant to provide citizens an opportunity to dispose of waste from cleaning up around their properties; and, WHEREAS,it initially started with one free day in the spring of 1977 and eventually grew to six free days in 1990; and, WHEREAS,in March 1996,the Council reduced the number to two annual free days in reaction to input from garbage haulers, and, at that time, it was also found through customer surveys that over 90% of customers only used two days; and, WHEREAS,these two annual RRP free days were designated as the fourth Saturday in April (to correspond with Earth Day) and the second Saturday in September; and, WHEREAS, a yard waste free day is also conducted each spring in conjunction with the April RRP free day; and, WHEREAS, this year, the fourth Saturday in April falls on April 22, 2006, which is also VEISHEA Weekend; and, WHEREAS,in order to be sensitive to our customers and work towards strengthening residential neighborhoods, it is suggested that RRP have an additional free day on June 10, 2006, with this additional day costing an estimated $12,000; and, WHEREAS,an additional yard waste free day could also be provided on April 29,2006,to assist with spring yard clean-up, and this additional free day will have an estimated cost of$6,000. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the additional free days of April 29,2006,as the date for yard waste and June 10,2006,as the date at the Resource Recovery Plant are hereby approved.
