HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Safe school routes RESOLUTION NO. 05-320 RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PLACEMENT OF ADULT CROSSING GUARDS, ADDITION OF THREE GUARDS,INSTALLATION OF PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS,AND FUNDING REQUEST TO AMES COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,the City has been working with the Ames Community School District(ACSD)to establish safe pedestrian routes to the elementary and middle schools; and, WHEREAS,with the changes in school boundaries and opening ofthe new Middle School,many children may be taking different routes to school this fall; and, WHEREAS, staff began meeting with parents and then walked and biked many of the routes that are of the greatest safety concerns; and, WHEREAS,joint staffineetings were held among City staff,ACSD administrators and principals,Central Iowa Transit, Inc.,bussing officials, and selected parents; and, WHEREAS, existing route plans were adjusted to reflect the new attendance boundaries; and, WHEREAS, the new school safe route plans require three additional crossing guards at an additional annual cost of$6,900 and a number ofphysical improvements,such as pedestiran signal modifications,sidewalks, crosswalk markings, and school crossing signs, which are estimated to cost$17,600; and, WHEREAS, other physical improvements may be determined to be necessary as the school year progresses,and school officials have been informed that the ACSD will be expected to finance these improvements; and, WHEREAS,the adult crossing guards are funded through the Police Department operating budget. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that authorization for the placement of the twelve adult crossing guards,including the addition of three new guards(at the City's cost of$6,900), and the installation of the identified physical improvements, with reimbursement for these improvements (at a cost of$17,600)to be requested from the Ames Community School District is hereby approved.
