RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF ASH AVENUE FOR
INSTALLATION OF ARTWORK AT ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CHURCH
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, City staff received a request to close a portion of Ash Avenue just south of
Lincoln Way in order to install an art piece at St. Thomas Aquinas Church; and,
WHEREAS,the street closure is necessary due to the size of crane that will be used to set the
artwork, and the installers indicate a need of about four hours to unload and place the art piece; and,
WHEREAS, Council action is necessary for this request since Ash Avenue in this area is a
CyRide route; and,
WHEREAS, CyRide officials indicate that they do not have a problem with the request and
will divert their route to Beach Avenue and Sunset Drive during the time that Ash Avenue is closed;
and,
WHEREAS, the exact date of the proposed closure is not decided, however, staff will work
with the installers to determine the time when the area is impacted the least; and,
WHEREAS,in addition to insurance requirements related to the obstruction permit,staff feels
it is important that area residents be made aware of the pending closure; and,
WHEREAS,notification of the street closure to those impacted properties should be made at
least 24 hours in advance of the actual closure.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that
the closure of Ash Avenue from Lincoln Way to Gable Lane for the installation of artwork at the
St. Thomas Aquinas Church is hereby approved subject to meeting all of the requirements of the
obstruction permit process and notification of the impacted area residents at least 24 hours in advance
of the closure.
