HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - 28E Agreement for tobacco enforcement RESOLUTION NO. 04-447 RESOLUTION APPROVING 28E AGREEMENT FOR TOBACCO ENFORCEMENT BETWEEN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE IOWA ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES DIVISION FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,the reduction of the sale of tobacco products to minors continues to be an important goal for the citizens of Ames; and WHEREAS, in the past three years, the Ames Police Department has teamed with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division for the state of Iowa to conduct compliance checks of tobacco licensees; and, WHEREAS, this has proven to be an effective tool to prevent those who are underage from purchasing tobacco products in our community; and, WHEREAS, through a 28E Agreement with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, the Ames Police Department will receive$50 for each compliance check conducted to help cover the cost of officer overtime and remuneration for the youth participants; and, WHEREAS,the Police Department will perform one compliance check of each tobacco licensee in Ames and an additional check of those found to be noncompliant; and, WHEREAS,in addition,this Agreement provides limited funding for the education of the retail employees who sell tobacco,and the Alcoholic Beverages Division will reimburse the Police Department for conducting training and testing for employees of retailers who sell tobacco; and, WHEREAS, this Agreement requires no local match and has been successful in the past three years. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the 28E Agreement for Tobacco Enforcement between the Ames Police Department and the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division is hereby approved.
