RESOLUTION APPROVING SELECTION OF
CASUALTY AND LIABILITY INSURANCE COVERAGES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,the policy for the City's liability insurance coverages expires on July 1, 2004; and,
WHEREAS, Employer's Mutual Casualty (EMC) currently provides the following coverages:
General Liability,Automobile Liability,Transit,Public Officials,Law Enforcement Activities,Employee
Dishonesty, and Excess Liability; and,
WHEREAS, Holmes-Murphy, which has served as the City's agent for the placement of this
coverage for the last three years, and City staff sought additional markets/carriers which would write
primary policies with large deductibles; and,
WHEREAS, only two were identified and both declined to quote the coverage based on certain
elements of risk(electric utility-distribution)that they deemed to be outside oftheir area of expertise;and,
WHEREAS,the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool(ICAP)is a governmental group risk-sharing
pool whose members consist of various governmental authorities through Iowa,and it provides property
and casualty coverage to over 485 Iowa public entities; and,
WHEREAS,ICAP is a group self-insured program formed under the Code of Iowa,endorsed by
the Iowa League of Cities and the Iowa State Association of Counties; and,
WHEREAS, the Pool is governed by a Board of Directors made up of seven representatives of
participating members.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
the purchase of General Liability, Auto, Transit, Excess, Public Officials, Law Enforcement, and
Employee Dishonesty coverages from the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool(ICAP2)in the amount of
$388,130.00 is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 22"d day of June, 2004.
