RESOLUTION APPROVING LOCATIONS AND PROCESS FOR
PROPOSED 2004/05 PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY PROGRAM
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,one of the major study elements of the approved Transportation Master Plan included pedestrian
facilities,and the Plan identified the need to have a convenient system of sidewalks; and,
WHEREAS, pedestrian facilities exist for access to certain land uses such as schools, local convenience
commercial areas,bus stops, employment centers,and recreational facilities; and,
WHEREAS, general guidelines suggest that sidewalks should be provided on both sides of the street in
commercial areas and in residential areas with one or more units per acre; and,
WHEREAS,the Transportation Master Plan identifies over 200 segments of existing street areas that do not have
sidewalks,and the Plan indicates that priority will be given to arterial and collector streets where the physical separation
of pedestrians and vehicles is of specific concern; and,
WHEREAS,the use of special assessments for sidewalk programs will involve notification to the adjacent owner
concerning the proposal to install sidewalks,the anticipated costs to be assessed,and the date of the information public
meeting; and,
WHEREAS,the owners will be given 90 days to complete the work themselves or through a hired contractor;
and,
WHEREAS, if the owners do not completed the work within the required time, staff will request Council
approval to begin the assessment process to install sidewalks under contract; and,
WHEREAS, staff has investigated several locations where sidewalks are missing along arterial and collector
streets,and the following locations have been identified to be included with the 2004/05 Program:east side of the street
on South Dakota Avenue(312 South Dakota to Lincoln Way); south side of the street on 13" Street(1227 Burnett to
Kellogg Avenue);West side of the street on Grand Avenue(Murray Street to 20"Street);east side of the street on Grand
Avenue(15"Street to 24"'Street);south side of the street on South Third and South Fourth Streets((1204 South Fourth
Street to Walnut Avenue); north side of the street on Woodland Street(Westwood Avenue to Franklin Avenue); and
east/south side of the street on Ash Avenue(Mortensen Road to Storm Street).
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the locations and
process for the 2004/05 Pedestrian Walkway Program is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 13"day of April, 2004.
