HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Purchase of Fire Apparatus RESOLUTION NO. 04-094 RESOLUTION WAIVING FORMAL BIDDING REQUIREMENTS AND AUTHORIZING NEGOTIATIONS FOR PURCHASE OF FIRE APPARATUS FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, Engine One is a 1987 Ford scheduled for replacement in 2004 and will be moved to reserve status; and, WHEREAS,the City's purchasing procedures require formal bidding for purchases over$50,000, and staff believes that there may be benefit in reduced costs by pursuing an alternative purchasing plan;and, WHEREAS,historically, fire trucks have been purchased through formal bidding by developing a generic and customized specification; and, WHEREAS,the complexity of fire apparatus has increased along with the cost, and the City does not routinely purchase similar equipment or possess in-house expertise to engineer custom fire apparatus; and, WHEREAS,in the industry,standard models with options unique to each manufacturer are available, and staff believes that by utilizing standard models and related pricing, a higher quality apparatus can be selected while reducing the cost to the taxpayers; and, WHEREAS, staff negotiations will be conducted to pursue opportunities for reducing costs by utilizing standard models and options rather than custom-engineered fire apparatus; and, WHEREAS, bids from multiple fire apparatus vendors will be sought on each of their standard models. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that waiver of formal bidding requirements for the purchase of a fire engine truck is hereby approved,and staff is authorized to negotiate contracts related to the purchase of an engine,subject to Council's approval of the contracts.
