RESOLUTION AWARDING CONTRACT FOR PURCHASE OF
WATER METERS AND RELATED PARTS AND SERVICES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the City standardized on the use of Badger water meters in the 1970's for water metering
applications,and this standardization allows the City to stock sufficient parts and accessories for new construction
as well as repairs; and,
WHEREAS,water meters,along with the accessories and parts to service,repair,and rebuild them,have
been purchased directly from Badger Meter Company at discounted prices on an as-needed basis since these
became the utility's standard; and,
WHEREAS,in early 2003,Badger Meter Company informed the City that it would no longer sell directly
to the City; and,
WHEREAS, while it was believed that only Badger Meter Company continues to produce the type of
remote read register that is compatible with the City's meter reading and billing program, the utility decided to
investigate alternatives; and,
WHEREAS,a Request for Proposals(RFP)was issued on August 14,2003,and one proposal was received
from Hydro Metering Technology of Burnsville,Minnesota,offering the Badger Meter Company products; and,
WHEREAS, the initial contract period is through June 30, 2005, and there are four optional 12-month
renewal periods during which prices would only be increased if the manufacturer increases prices to Hydro
Metering Technology; and,
WHEREAS,the FY 2003/04 budget includes$120,000 for the purchase of water meters and related parts,
of which approximately$60,000 remains; and,
WHEREAS, the requested FY 2004/05 operating budget for Water and Pollution Control includes
$120,000 for the purchase of meters and meter parts.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council ofthe City of Ames,Iowa, that the contract
with Hydro Metering Technology to furnish water meters and related parts and services for the Water and Pollution
Control Department through June 30,2005,(with four 12-month optional renewal periods) is hereby approved.
