RESOLUTION APPROVING STREET CLOSURES FOR
2004 GREEK WEEK OLYMPICS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,the Greek Week 2004 Central Committee has requested from the City that streets be closed
for the Greek Week Olympics on Saturday,March 27, from 10:00 a.m.to 6:00 p.m.; and,
WHEREAS,the closures would be along the"Sorority Circle"and include Greeley Street(Gray Avenue
to Pearson Avenue), Pearson Avenue (Ash Avenue to Greeley Street), Gray Avenue (Greeley Street to Sunset
Drive),and Sunset Drive(Ash Avenue to Gray Avenue); and,
WHEREAS,in addition to the street closures,organizers have also requested that the City allow them to
tow vehicles that remain parked along these streets prior to the event; and,
WHEREAS,staff is concerned about liability of transferring the towing responsibility,therefore,it does
not recommend that the organizer's towing request be approved;however,recognizing the importance of removal
of any vehicles in the area, the Police Department will coordinate any towing following the issuance of the
appropriate parking citations; and,
WHEREAS,for this towing provision,staff has informed the organizers that they would be responsible
for posting the City-furnished"Police Order—No Parking"signs along the streets at least 24 hours in advance so
as to adequately inform parking users; and,
WHEREAS, staff recommended that requests be approved with the following stipulations:
1. No alcohol be served or consumed on streets or other public property during the events.
2. Greek Week organizers inform affected residents about the street closures/parking restrictions.
3. Greek Week organizers will be responsible for picking up trash in the area at the conclusion of the
event.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the request
of Greek Week 2004 Central Committee to close the above-named streets for the Greek Week Olympics is hereby
approved subject to the provisions regarding the towing procedure, alcohol consumption, informing affected
residents,and trash pick up in the area.
ADOPTED THIS 2nd day of March, 2004.
