HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Changes to Police Department staffing level RESOLUTION NO. 04-048 RESOLUTION APPROVING CHANGES TO AUTHORIZED POLICE DEPARTMENT STAFFING LEVEL FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,the Ames Police Department currently has an open police officer position; and, WHEREAS,a certified officer was recently offered the open position,but on February 11 decided to retest with the Police Department in March because of a family issue; and, WHEREAS, the remaining candidates who are in consideration for hiring are not police officer certified and would be required to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy(ILEA); and, WHEREAS,a newly-hired police candidate is not allowed to work along until they have completed 13 weeks of the ILEA and successfully completed 12 weeks or more of the Ames Police Field Training Program; and, WHEREAS,if another candidate is offered employment,a series of background investigations and testing is conducted, therefore,placing the actual hiring date into mid-April; and, WHEREAS, after April 12,the next ILEA class starts September 7, 2004; and, WHEREAS,the Police Department requests that this position be frozen or temporarily decreased by one until June 1,2004, and it is anticipated that the savings to the Police Department's budget will be $15,000; and, WHEREAS,at that time,the Department would start the Field Training Program,and the candidate would enter the Iowa Law Enforcement academy in September. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the immediate temporary diminution of one authorized police officer position is hereby approved, and same police officer position will be reinstated on June 1, 2004.
