RESOLUTION APPROVING PRELIMINARY PLANNING STUDY
FOR GRAND AVENUE EXTENSION
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the Master Transportation Plan calls for development of a project to extend
Grand Avenue south from Lincoln Way; and,
WHEREAS,the purpose of the Grand Avenue Extension project is primarily to provide an
alternate north-south travel corridor that will divert traffic from the most congested sections of
Lincoln Way and South Duff Avenue; and,
WHEREAS,the City Council authorized the completion of a preliminary planning study to
determine a preliminary planning level alignment for the roadway, calculate an updated cost
estimate, and look at potential impacts to traffic and utilities; and,
WHEREAS, the Study shows that a five-lane street would be required north of South 4tn
Street, a three-lane facility from South 4tn Street to South 5tth Street, and a two-lane street south to
South 16t' Street; and,
WHEREAS, the Study also shows that additional left-turn lanes at the cross-street
intersections would be needed, and right-of-way would have to be purchased from Squaw Creek
Drive south and along the South 5tn Street segment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the Grand Avenue Extension Preliminary Planning Study is accepted and staff is directed to
continue to pursue funding opportunities with development of a project targeted for 2006/07.
