HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Check policy for investigation of insufficient funds RESOLUTION NO. 03-412 RESOLUTION APPROVING CHANGE IN POLICE DEPARTMENT'S CHECK POLICY FOR INVESTIGATION OF INSUFFICIENT FUNDS FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,the current policy of the Ames Police Department is to accept all insufficient funds checks for criminal investigation regardless of the amount for which the check was written; and, WHEREAS, these amounts have ranged from 20 cents to multi-thousands of dollars; and, WHEREAS,cases investigated by the Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit have evolved over the years and have become more complex and labor intensive; and, WHEREAS,in addition to insufficient funds check investigations,unit members are responsible for investigating identification thefts,forgeries,embezzlements,credit card thefts,and computer frauds; and, WHEREAS, to more efficiently allocate its resources, staff is proposing a policy change to initiate criminal investigation only ifthe amount ofthe insufficient funds check is in excess of$200;and, WHEREAS,it should be emphasized that the Police Department will continue to investigate all forgeries no matter what the amount; and, WHEREAS,if this policy change is approved by the City Council,the Police Department will retain the option to consider criminal investigation of insufficient funds checks under the$200 limit if extenuating circumstances arise. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the change in the Police Department's check policy for investigation of insufficient funds in excess of $200 is hereby approved.
