RESOLUTION APPROVING FOUR-WAY STOP SIGNS AT

FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, in response to citizens'requests request for installation of four-way stop signs
at Arizona Avenue and Ross Road, traffic engineering studies were conducted during May 2003;
and,
WHEREAS, these studies were made in order to determine if the existing "uncontrolled"
intersection conditions were appropriate of if yield or stops signs should be installed; and,
WHEREAS, in order to determine if four-way stops are appropriate, City staff looks to the
standards contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices(MUTCD),which has been
adopted by the federal, state, and city governments; and,
WHEREAS,traffic volumes at this intersection would need to increase significantly beyond
current levels to meet the MUTCD warrant for four-way stop installations; and,
WHEREAS,a letter from the Sawyer Elementary School PTO supports installation of a four-
way stop at the intersection; and,
WHEREAS, if the Council believes that more restrictive traffic control devices are desired,
staff believes there is more justification for the installation of a two-way stop control than for a four-
way.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the installation of four-way stop control signs at the intersection of Arizona Avenue and Ross
Road is hereby approved.
