RESOLUTION APPROVING
STREET ADDRESSING GUIDELINES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,for more than 40 years,one Senior Engineering Technician has been responsible for assigning
street addresses;and,
WHEREAS,the methodology was based on a few simple rules and experience working with the post office;
and,
WHEREAS,when this employee retired,the addressing duties were given to another Technician,and it was
quickly discovered that an addressing policy guide needed to be developed to provide consistency and accuracy in the
addressing system;and,
WHEREAS,establishing formal themes for growth areas also needed to become part of the guide;and,
WHEREAS,this need prompted the formulation of an addressing team consisting of employees from Police,
Fire,Inspections,Customer Services,Information Services,Planning and Housing,and Public Works;and,
WHEREAS, in developing a program for the City of Ames, a sub-team was formed to review addressing
policies currently in use by other communities;and,
WHEREAS,a draft policy program was developed,a public information meeting was held to review it and
gain input from members of the local design/development community,and the program was well received by those
attending;and,
WHEREAS,the Administrative Program for Street Naming and Addressing document is designed to assist
not only the person responsible for assigning addresses,but it will benefit a wide range of citizens;and,
WHEREAS,developers will have guidelines to assist them in assigning street names for new subdivisions;
and,
WHEREAS,with these guidelines in place,the general public as well as emergency personnel will be able
to locate a particular area as well as addresses in a timely manner.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the
Administrative Program for Street Naming and Addressing is hereby approved.
