RESOLUTION APPROVING CONTRACT WITH
JOHN DEERE HEALTH PLAN AS
ADMINISTRATORS OF THE
HEALTH-CARE PLAN
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,in the past year,staff has become aware that previously unavailable health care
administrators have negotiated contracts with the City's local providers,McFarland Clinic and Mary
Greeley Medical Center; and,
WHEREAS, an internal Health Improvement Team has been meeting for over nine months
to evaluate data on the City's health and pharmacy coverages,and one of their recommendations was
to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Medical Insurance and Third-Parry Administrator
Services; and,
WHEREAS,the RFP from John Deere Health Plan scored the highest in terms of total points,
and in particular, in the Medical Management area; and,
WHEREAS, it is staff s recommendation that the City move its health-care administration
from Wellmark to John Deere Health Plan; and,
WHEREAS, Wellmark has slightly larger provider discounts,but these discounts are more
than offset by the savings in the administrative and stop loss under the John Deere Health Plan;and,
WHEREAS, the John Deere Health Plan care delivery management program demonstrates
significantly better results in medical management, quality, and personal health management.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,
that approval is hereby given to shift the City's health care third-parry administration from Wellmark
to the John Deere Health Plan, effective July 1, 2003.
