HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Demolition of City-owned properties at Fifth Street and Grand Avenue RESOLUTION NO. 03-154 RESOLUTION APPROVING DEMOLITION OF CITY-OWNED PROPERTIES AT FIFTH STREET AND GRAND AVENUE FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,in 2001,the City seized the opportunity to purchase three properties at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fifth Street for $333,735 with the use of G.O. Bonds and Local Option Sales Tax Funds; and, WHEREAS,at the time of the purchase,staff evaluated the condition of the properties and identified significant exterior and interior repair work that would need to be completed over a possible five-year period; and, WHEREAS, it was felt that the work would be deferred for the first year until rental income was available to cover the repair cost; and, WHEREAS, since over a year has passed, staff recently reevaluated the condition of the properties and has found that the overall condition of the properties has greatly deteriorated,especially on the exterior; and, WHEREAS,it should be emphasized that even after improvements are made,the structures will still be in fair to poor condition; and, WHEREAS,staff has compiled an analysis of the revenues and expenditures of these properties,and continued ownership of these properties will result in costs exceeding revenues; and, WHEREAS,there would be sufficient revenue to demolish these structures and to convert this area to an attractive landscaped entry to the downtown. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the demolition of the City-owned structures at 510 Grand Avenue, 623 Fifth Street, and 631 Fifth Street at an approximate cost of$63,000 is hereby approved with the properties being maintained as a landscaped area until such time that it is used for City Hall expansion or some other purpose established by the City Council.
