RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING REVISION TO
THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS PROGRAM (CIP)
FOR OIL AND GREASE RECEIVING STATION PROJECT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,historically,local restaurant and food service establishments have used oil and grease
traps to collect these wastes from being discharged into the sanitary sewer; and,
WHEREAS, if discharged into the sanitary sewer, sewer line blockages occur, and additional
maintenance is required; and,
WHEREAS,local restaurant/food facilities have hired waste haulers to clean and dispose of the oil
and grease wastes collected in these grease traps;however,due to increased regulatory review,waste haulers
have refused to clean grease trips for local facilities; and,
WHEREAS,to avoid discharges of oil and grease into the sanitary sewer system and the resultant
problems,Water and Pollution Control(WPC)staff agreed to accept these hauled wastes at the plant on an
interim basis; and,
WHEREAS,staff previously identified an oil and grease receiving station as a potential project for
the WPC Plant for Fiscal Year 2004;however,the situation now being faced by local restaurants caused staff
to reconsider its priorities; and,
WHEREAS,City staff is recommending that the currently approved CIP be modified to accelerate
construction of an oil and grease receiving station and delay construction of the previously adopted WPC
Plant Biosolids Storage/Thickening Project; and,
WHEREAS,the oil and grease receiving station is projected in the CIP for FY 2003-04 in an amount
of$115,000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
revisions to the approved Fiscal Year 2002/03 budget and CIP to include the Oil and Grease Receiving
Station are hereby authorized.
ADOPTED THIS 271h day of August, 2002.
