HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Repair and redesign of Wind Spinners Sculpture RESOLUTION NO. 02-293 RESOLUTION APPROVING FUNDS FOR REPAIR OF `WIND SPINNERS' SCULPTURE FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,in March 2000,the `Wind Spinners' sculpture had sustained major wind damage to one of the spinning components; and, WHEREAS, there are also significant tears in the metal that completely severed one of four vanes, and a long tear line was created in a second vane at the point of attachment to the central post; and, WHEREAS, the work of art has required major surgery over the years to correct structural problems resulting from strong winds at the Water Treatment Plant location; and, WHEREAS, the Public Art Commission (PAC) desires to repair the broken `Wind Spinners' sculpture and reconstruct existing components so as to improve the aesthetic look of the entire work of art; and, WHEREAS,local artist/metalsmith Mark Knuth has given the PAC a$2,000-$2,100 figure for repair/reconstruction of the sculpture; and, WHEREAS, the PAC approved this initiative voting to use the remaining funds in its FY 2002/03 budget for the project and to request that the Council approve the project and provide the necessary additional funds; and, WHEREAS,the Commission has$1,203 in available funds to use for this repair/reconstruction project, and asks that the Council provide funds up to $897. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the repair and redesign of the `Wind Spinners' sculpture by Ames artist/metalsmith Mark Knuth is hereby approved, and funds from the Local Option Tax Fund in an amount not to exceed $897 are hereby authorized for repair and redesign.
