RESOLUTION APPROVING REQUESTS FOR
2002 SHRINE BOWL ALL-STAR FOOTBALL CLASSIC PARADE
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,for the third consecutive year,the Iowa Shrine Bowl is planning to have the Iowa All-Star
Game in Ames on Saturday,July 27,2002,at the Jack Trice Stadium,and this event has long been recognized
as a showcase for Iowa athletes who will be participating at the college level this upcoming school year;and,
WHEREAS, as part of this event,the Iowa Shrine Bowl is requesting to temporarily close streets for
the Iowa Shrine Bowl Parade on July 27d'; and,
WHEREAS,the parade will begin at 10:30 a.m.and will be routed along Fifth Street,Douglas Avenue,
Main Street,and Pearle Avenue with it lasting until about 11:30 a.m.; and,
WHEREAS, parade organizers are also requesting that parking within the metered area along the
parade route be curtailed beginning an hour prior to the start of the parade to minimize disruption and to
enhance safety; and,
WHEREAS, the shrine parade procession is wanting to stage the parade starting at 9:30 a.m. within
the west City Hall parking lot and requests that the City's 35 "official vehicles"be relocated for the weekend
in the east City Hall parking lot; and,
WHEREAS,the Police Department,the Fire Department,and CyRide have been contacted and have
no problems with the temporary street closures for the parade; and,
WHEREAS, finally, the Shrine Bowl requests that the fees associated with directing traffic for this
event be waived.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the
following requests for the 2002 Shrine Bowl All-Star Football Classic Parade to be held on July 27,2002,are
hereby approved: 1) temporary street/intersection closures along Main Street (Pearle Avenue to Douglas
Avenue),Pearle Avenue(Main Street to Fifth Street),Douglas Avenue(Main Street to Fifth Street),and Fifth
Street(Pearle Avenue to Douglas Avenue)from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; 2) on-street parking is prohibited
from 9:30 a.m. for the duration of the parade along the closed sections of the parade route; 3)use of the west
City Hall parking lot for staging of the parade units which will include relocating the City's"official vehicles"
to the east City Hall parking lot; and, 4)waiver of any costs associated with directing traffic for the parade.
ADOPTED THIS 23rd day of April, 2002.
