HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Disposal of surplus equipment - sale of handguns to Ames police officers RESOLUTION NO. 02-168 RESOLUTION APPROVING WAIVER OF CITY'S PURCHASING POLICY FOR DISPOSAL OF SURPLUS EQUIPMENT AND AUTHORIZING THE SALE OF HANDGUNS TO AMES POLICE OFFICERS AND/OR CENTRAL IOWA LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS WHEREAS, during 2000 the Police Department standardized the type of handgun carried by police officers and retired all revolvers that had been in service; and, WHEREAS, the 35 handguns have an estimated value of$3,500; and, WHEREAS,there is a reluctance to sell these weapons to the general public for fear that they could be used in the commission of a criminal act; and, WHEREAS, in an effort to generate funds for the City from this unused equipment, staff is requesting authorization to sell these weapons first to Ames police officers,and if there is not enough interest from Ames officers, to make the weapons available to Central Iowa law enforcement officers; and, WHEREAS,purchasers of these handguns will have to agree to keep the weapon for at least ten years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that waiver of the City's purchasing policy for disposal of City equipment is hereby approved and the sale of approximately 35 handguns to Ames police officers and/or Central Iowa law enforcement officers is hereby authorized.
