RESOLUTION APPROVING ALLOCATION OF
$25,000 FROM ELECTRIC FUND FOR COMPETITION FOR
THE LANDMARK CHALLENGE
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS,the Electric Services Power Plant towers over Main Street and is silhouetted against
the horizon,and many have dreamed of converting it into a community asset that would create a"sense
of place"and"sense of arrival"that are envisioned in the Ames Plan,Land Use Policy Plan(LUPP),and
Downtown Plan; and,
WHEREAS, the Power Plant has the distinction of being one of the tallest buildings in Ames,
and it could serve as a backdrop for downtown Ames that inspires residents,visitors,and those who pass
by along Interstate 35; and,
WHEREAS,an element of the LUPP deals with the enhancement of the major entryways to our
community; consequently, the City Manager has been working with a group of creative citizens who
have developed a process for obtaining the most imaginative concepts for altering this structure; and,
WHEREAS,the City will solicit concept design plans that will focus on converting the Power
Plant into an aesthetic landmark for our community; and,
WHEREAS, in order to entice the submission of quality concepts, $1,000 will be awarded to a
maximum of five finalists,with a$10,000 award for the concept that is ultimately selected as the winner;
and,
WHEREAS, the amount of money that is being requested to accomplish the competition
totals $25,000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the allocation of$25,000 from the Electric Fund for competition for the"Landmark Challenge"
is hereby approved.
