HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Amendment regarding monetary support for 9/11 Disaster Relief Contribution RESOLUTION NO. 02-098 RESOLUTION AMENDING RESOLUTION APPROVING MONETARY SUPPORT TO NEW YORK CITY,NY; WASHINGTON,DC; AND SUMMERSET COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA,IN RESPONSE TO THE TERRORIST ATTACK OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS,on September 18,2001,the City Council adopted Resolution 01-425 pledging financial support in the amount of$50,731 (representing $1 per citizen) to the "Always Remember 9-11 Fund," in response to the terrorist attacks that had occurred on the 1 lth day of September, 2001; and, WHEREAS,those funds were pledged contingent upon the state of Iowa's 15 most-populated cities pledging the same type of monetary support; and, WHEREAS,City staff was informed by the Iowa League of Cities that only five of the largest 15 cities (including Ames)had made similar commitments; and, WHEREAS, on January 22, 2002, the City Council directed staff to investigate the "Always Remember 9-11 Fund"to see if funds were still being raised and if the monies would be used for the purpose originally intended; and, WHEREAS, it was learned from contacting the National League of Cities that funds were still being raised and that the "Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund"had been designated to receive all future funds to be used to provide scholarships for the families of individuals killed or disabled in the September 11 attacks; and, WHEREAS,it was also learned that the National League of Cities had suggested$1 per employee be donated by city governments; and, WHEREAS, the City of Ames employs 544 individuals full-time. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that Resolution No. 01-425 is hereby amended to state financial support in the amount of$544, representing $1/employee, is hereby approved to be pledged to the "Always Remember 9-11 Fund" to assist New York City,NY;Washington,DC;and Summerset County,Pennsylvania,following the terrorist attack that occurred on September 11, 2001.
