RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF
WEST STREET BETWEEN HYLAND AVENUE AND
CAMPUS AVENUE FOR
NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK PARTY
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS,residents and shop owners on and adjacent to the 2800 block of West Street have asked permission
to close a one-block section of the street between Hyland Avenue and Campus Avenue for a neighborhood block party
on November 1 between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.; and,
WHEREAS,this event will be an alcohol-free social gathering for West Street residents only; and,
WHEREAS,authorization for most block parties can be given administratively,however,this request contains
three elements that necessitate Council approval: closing a secondary arterial street, closing the street after dark, and
waiving the meter fee (nine meters for four hours each); and,
WHEREAS,the Public Works director has evaluated this request and has given his approval to temporarily close
the block on West Street with the following stipulations:
1. The group will be required to rent"Type 3"barricades and flashers for both ends of the area to be block and have
someone"man"the barricades at all times so as to provide immediate access to the area for emergency vehicles.
2. The group will be required to obtain"temporary no parking"signs from the Public Works Department and install
them on both sides of the street in the block to be closed the night before the event in an effort to allow vehicles
to be moved from the area in a timely manner. The signs will be clearly marked with the date and time of the
"temporary no parking"restriction.
3. Obtain a noise permit from the Ames Police Department.
4. The area is to be cleaned up after the event.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the request to
close West Street between Hyland Avenue and Campus Avenue on November 1 from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for a
neighborhood block party is hereby approved subject to the above-listed stipulations.
ADOPTED THIS 23rd day of October,2001.
