RESOLUTION APPROVING THE USE OF TOM EVANS PLAZA, CLOSING
A SECTION OF THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT PARKING LOT,AND
ALLOWING THE DOWNTOWN FARMERS' MARKET TO OPERATE
ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2001, FOR A "CELEBRATE IOWA" EVENT
WHEREAS, WHO-TV (Channel 13) has chosen Ames as the feature city for September 14,
2001,which will consist of broadcasting stories about Ames during the 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. newscasts;
and,
WHEREAS,WHO-TV has asked to use the Tom Evans Plaza as a backdrop for the broadcast;
and,
WHEREAS,the Ames Main Street Association has been coordinating this event with WHO-TV;
and,
WHEREAS,there will need to be space utilized in the Central Business District(CBD)parking
lot to accommodate the expected crowd of viewers; and,
WHEREAS, City staff is recommending the use of the first three rows of parking spaces west
of the Tom Evans Plaza in the CBD parking lot for this purpose, and this area will need to be blocked
off at 1:00 p.m.(to allow people in this three-hour parking lot to move their vehicles by 4:00 p.m.)until
7:00 p.m.; and,
WHEREAS, the Downtown Farmers' Market has been asked by the Ames Main Street
Association to operate from the south side of Main Street from Clark Avenue to Burnett Avenue on
September 14 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with this "Celebrate Iowa" event; and,
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that
the use of Tom Evans Plaza, the closure of a section of the CBD parking lot, and the operation of the
Farmers' Market as above-mentioned, all on September 14, 2001, are hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 1 lth day of September, 2001.
