RESOLUTION APPROVING
RECREATION/AQUATICS COMPLEX
MASTER PLAN
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, in 1998, the Parks and Recreation Commission actively began engaging residents
and user groups to determine what recreation facility needs existed within the community and if residents
would financially support new facility development; and,
WHEREAS, based on that information, the architectural firm of RDG was retained to develop
conceptual design plans and cost estimates for a Recreation/Aquatic Complex; and,
WHEREAS,from an original list of 14 potential locations within the community in October 2000,
City Council selected the site of Gateway Park for this Complex; and,
WHEREAS, in December 2000, the City Council selected a preferred design alternative for a
109,000-square-foot facility at an estimated cost of$24 million;
WHEREAS, in January 2001, the City Council directed staff to prepare a Vision Iowa grant
application combining this project and Reiman Gardens in an attempt to receive 50% in state funding;
and,
WHEREAS, in the event the 50%in funding is received from Vision Iowa,the City will need to
proceed in setting a bond referendum date; and,
WHEREAS, the City's specified funding source in the application for the matching funds is
subject to the success of a bond referendum.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
the Master Plan for the Recreation/Aquatics Complex is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 1 Oth day of April, 2001.
