HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Agreement for Design of Artwork for Ames Circle of Arts RESOLUTION NO. 01-088 RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AGREEMENT FOR DESIGN OF ARTWORK FOR "AMES CIRCLE OR ARTS" SCULPTURE FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS,in January 1999,the City received a$25,000 donation for public art from Doug and Pat Brown; and, WHEREAS,the Public Art Commission(PAC)then launched an fund-raising campaign to raise an additional $50,000, so nearly $75,000 has now been collected to purchase artwork as a part of the Patricia J. And E. Douglas Brown Collection; and, WHEREAS,in October 1999,the PAC sent out a proposal prospectus to solicit artwork proposals, and by the April 1,2000,deadline, a wide variety of proposals had been received from 146 artists across the country; and, WHEREAS,the Commission reviewed all of the proposals and narrowed the list to nine,and after considering input from the public, it selected a proposal by Rhode Island artist Bill Culbertson as its preferred choice; and, WHEREAS,the Public Art Commission met with the Parks and Recreation Commission,and this Commission gave its tentative approval to locating Mr. Culbertson's artwork in the northwest corner of Bandshell Park; and, WHEREAS,if both the concept and the location are approved,the Council should authorize staff to take the next step and enter into an agreement with the artist for the design of the sculpture. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the"Ames Circle of Arts"sculpture concept by Bill Culbertson is hereby approved,and staff is authorized to enter into an agreement with the artist for final design of this sculpture.
