OLYMPIA MILLENNIUM ICE RESURFACER
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS, the existing Olympia ice resurfacer that was purchased in 1992 is scheduled for
replacement; and,
WHEREAS,only two companies manufacture ice-resurfacing machines:Olympia and Zamboni;and,
WHEREAS,prior to 1992,the City's experience with maintaining and operating a Zamboni was less
than desirable due to specialized parts being available only from Zamboni, the difficulty in keeping the unit
running, and excessive emissions from the engine; and,
WHEREAS,Olympia and Zamboni each have several models/sizes of ice resurfacers, however, none
of the machines are equal one to the other for competitive bidding and pricing; and,
WHEREAS, the current Olympia machine, with an 84" ice cut, has proven to be an excellent size
without being too big; and,
WHEREAS,the closest Zamboni machine has only a smaller 77" ice cut while their next larger unit
has a 96" cut and is too large for the Ames/ISU Ice Arena; and,
WHEREAS, staff has determined that it is most desirable and to the City's advantage to purchase a
new Olympia Millennium model ice resurfacer as a replacement to the current machine due to the location of
the dealer, the ease of maintenance, the size of the machine, and the assumed price advantage.
